In Tennessee and other States, some day care centers follow the rules and regulations and do a great job in supervising and caring for children while many others do not. It is unfortunate the day care centers fail to follow rules that are clearly spelled out in State statutes, regulations, and other laws. In Tennessee, a day care center was recently placed on 2 months of probation for violations of state day care standards and regulations. This same day care center was the site the death of a 2 year old child earlier in the year. John’nay Lewis suffered a fatal head injury when a piece of furniture fell on her head at the Tennessee day care. She died as a result of these injuries the day after the incident. A common day care item (furniture) ended the life of an innocent 2 year old child. This case and others show the importance of maintenance and safety precautions at a day care center. Furniture should be in good repair and all bookshelves, televisions, picture frames, and other items should be secured by anchors and other measures to prevent injuries to children.
