Education%20Day%20Care%20Building%20Block%20F.jpgAt some day care centers in Canada and the United States, there is a common danger present that can cause personal injuries to children enrolled in the day care center. Stairs can be quite dangerous for day care center children. This is especially true for children who are unsteady on their feet. In addition, even with children with good walking skills, stairs can be dangerous if there is an item left on the stairs. In addition, stairs can present a problem children are playing or pushing each other on or near the stairs.

When stairs are present at day care centers, gates should be used when possible to keep children from playing on or using the stairs when an adult is not present on or near the staircase or stair way. Furthermore, it is vital that appropriate supervision is in place when children use stairs at a day care center.

Country%20Flag%20Canada.jpgToys can provide a child with hours of fun play time. Toys can also present a choking or health hazard for children. Fisher Price is a major toy manufacturer and distributed. “Little People” has been a big success for the toy company for many years. Health Canada is advising parents to go through toy rooms and boxes to see if any pre-1991 “Little People” are located. The toys pre-1991 were and are small enough to create a serious choking hazard for small children. An article posted at The Vancouver Sun provides more details and a photograph comparing the older “Little People” versus the new and definitely improved “Little People”. The post 1991 “Little People” have a wider base and certainly would be more difficult to impossible for a child to swallow.

Canadian medical researchers have reported that children with arthritis are at higher risk for fractures. The medical study demonstrated that vertebral (spinal) fractures were associated with this higher risk population of children. Arthritis in children is commonly associated with abnormally low bone mass called osteopenia. This, in turn, can progress to osteoporosis which is also called brittle bone disease. The study was reported in the Journal of Pediatrics. The research was conducted through the Montreal Children’s Hospital.
