While the total number of children being suspended or expelled has actually dropped in recent years, a study from Great Britain shows that children with special needs, those who qualify for free lunch programs, and those from ethnic minorities are sent home eight times more often than their peers. The study also noted that boys were three times more likely than girls to be suspended or expelled from school.
Five families from Great Falls Montana believe that their special needs children were severely abused by the 7th and 8th grade special needs classroom teacher aids at North Middle School. Tragically, the children’s special needs – autism, cerebral palsy and down syndrome – prevented them from reporting the alleged abuse. Julie Parish and Kristina Marie Kallies have been charged with felony assault on a minor and misdemeanor endangering the welfare of children. Ms. Parish has been arrested but police have been unable to find Ms. Kallie.
In an 11th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals decision, the court reversed a federal district court opinion that held the State Medicaid program must provide the level of nursing services deemed necessary by a disabled child’s doctor. This case involved a North Georgia teenager who suffers from mental retardation and cerebral palsy. Her doctor ordered 24 hour in home nursing care.
Michigan authorities are conducting an investigation regarding the death of a 9 year old quadraplegic girl. Tragically, her body was found inside a public storage facility.
Special needs children / students need to have proper supervision and patience from teachers in Indiana and other States. In Lafayette, Indiana, a special need middle school teacher was fired by the school board for duct taping a student’s mouth shut. This truly is no way to discipline a child or make a point. It is corporal punishment – plain and simple. Pamela Dahnke, the middle school teacher, was a health and nutrition teacher. One would think that she would realize the psychological and social ramifications of such acts in Indiana.
Children, special needs adults, and the elderly need proper supervision and assistance especially when they are transported away from their homes and under the care of others. In New York, a special needs 22 year old (Edwin Rivera) was left a bus all night. The 22 year old had cerebral palsy and spent a cold winter’s night on the school bus when his caretaker forgot or did not check to see that Edwin Rivera was still on the bus.
