vehicle%20car%20keys%20alarm%20black.jpgIn Ohio and other States, it is important for drivers to obey traffic signals, posted speed limit signs, and otherwise drive in a safe and reasonable manner. Many automobile accidents are preventable if a driver follows road signs and traffic regulations. When a driver is careless or otherwise drives in a negligent manner, accidents take place which can and do cause personal injuries and, in some accidents, the wrongful death of children and others.

street%20crosswalk%20pedestrian%20personal%20injuries.jpgIn Wisconsin and other States, drivers should slow down and be very cautious when driving in or near school zones. This is especially true when a child is being guided or directed by a school crossing guard. It should be noted that school crossing guards perform a vital function in our community. The school crossing guard is in place to protect the health, safety and well being of school children during morning and afternoon hours. While the pay for a school crossing guard is not the highest on the pay scale for a government employee, school crossing guards serve a valuable service and function in most communities. When you see a school crossing guard in your community, show them the respect that they deserve. More importantly, obey the instructions and directions of a school crossing guard.

vehicle%20car%20keys%20alarm%20black.jpgIn Pennsylvania and other States, children are at risk for being hit by a vehicle while being cared for in a day care center. That’s right. While one would think that the indoor or outdoor facilities of a day care center would be safe and free from traffic, there have been a number of reports over the past few years of drivers crashing into day care centers. In some instances, a driver is in the parking lot and loses control of the vehicle. In other instances, a driver veeres off a busy commercial street and into the day care center. It is certainly shocking for the parents of the children hit by a vehicle at a day care center. At one moment, the parent is dropping off a child. Hours later, a call is received that there was an accident and the child suffered personal injuries.

Fire%20Rescue%20Paramedic%20Red%20Emergency%20Vehicle.jpgParents, schools, relatives, day care centers, and schools that transport children should use booster seats for children 4 feet 9 inches and shorter and / or children up to 8 years old. A study organized by Boston Children’s Hospital – Division of Emergency Medicine support the use of booster seats for these children as a measure to reduce injuries and deaths resulting from automobile accidents. The study analyzed data including whether or not the fatality took place in a State with or without a booster seat law for children. It was reported that States with a booster seat law in place reported a 20 % lower rate of death and serious personal injuries resulting from automobile accidents. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the use of booster seats as do many child safety advocates. Unfortunately, the booster seats are used for approximately 50 $ of 4 to 5 years old and only 35 % for 6 to 7 years old. You can read more about this study and the findings at Study Supports Effectiveness of Booster Seats for Children.

Halloween%20Jack%20O%20Lantern%20Child%20Safety.jpgHalloween is a great time for fun and celebration for children, families, and neighborhoods. With all of this activity, there are also risks and dangers to children. It has been reported that Halloween is one of the top three holidays associated with children being sent and treated at an emergency room. The other two holidays are Memorial Day and Independence Day (Fourth of July). It is estimated that over 40 million children will participate in Halloween trick or treat activities this year. Because of the sheer numbers who will be out in the streets and neighborhoods along with the fact that Halloween is traditionally celebrated at night, many children are injured every year during Halloween.

education%20school%20day%20care%20yellow%20school%20bus%20close%20up%20of%20top%20front%20of%20bus.jpgIn Texas and other States, school bus drivers and day care center van drivers have a duty to drive in a safe manner, to obey posted speed limits and traffic control devices, to supervise the children being transported, and to make sure that children are removed from the bus after arrival at school or the intended destination. It is a relatively simple act to remove children from the bus after arrival at the school, day care center, or intended destination. The school bus driver / day care center van driver should do a visual inspection and then walk through the entire van or bus checking each seat and row for children.
