In Terrytown, Louisiana, it was reported that a car crashed into a private elementary school. Six children suffered personal injuries. One of those children was reported to have suffered critical injuries. The school is located just outside of New Orleans. Fire Rescue was called to the scene to remove the children from the rubble. The sheriff’s office reported that the driver was a mother who was dropping off her child at the Stepping Stones Montessori School. The driver / mother thought she had stepped on the brake but stepped on the accelerator instead and crashed into the school. There have been other incidents reported in other States of similar crashes. In just a matter of seconds – lives can changed due to negligent driving. A motorist, driving a sports utility vehicle, lost control of the automobile sending 14 people to the hospital, 12 of whom were children. Nine children were reported seriously hurt, three were in fair condition and two adults were also hospitalized in serious condition. The driver of the SUV will be cited with child endangerment and several seat belt violations, as the 12 children passengers were not properly restrained in the Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition.
In Sheboygan, Wisconsin, a hit and run accident was reported. An 11 year old child was walking in a crosswalk when he was hit by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle hit the child and then fled the scene. It was reported by police that the child was approximately four to five feet into the crosswalk when he was hit by a red four door compact vehicle.
Cassius Walker, an 8-year-old boy of Augusta, Georgia, sustained critical personal injuries after he was struck by a pickup truck while trying to board his school bus. Cassius attends Thomson Elementary School in McDuffie County, Georgia. According to the Augusta Chronicle, Cassius was listed in critical condition at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital. A daycare bus flipped over in northwest Houston, Texas injuring the bus driver and a child riding on the bus. The bus was operated by Kollege 4 Kidz Learning Center. According to officials, the daycare bus collided with a sports utility vehicle causing the bus to flip onto its side. A two-car crash in Michigan killed five and left others in serious or critical condition. Heather Comstock, 18, her boyfriend, Matthew Kostoe, 18, and Sarina Seger, 18, were driving a Toyota Prius home after attending an annual football game against Michigan State University. While driving home, authorities say, the Prius crossed the median and slammed into an oncoming Chevrolet Blazer, killing two adults and injuring three children. The victims in the SUV were identified as Cythia Skutt, 62, and Alfred King, 56, both from Fremont, Ohio. Another 18-year-old was in Prius who was in critical condition, according to officials. Unfortunately Mississippi has been ranked as the State with the highest rate of child deaths in the nation. This is a distinction or ranking that no State would ever relish or want. The Child Death Review Panel for the Mississippi Department of Health has a mission to study the death rates, causes of death, and work to reduce these numbers or statistics. Each year, the Mississippi Child Death Review Panel studies these very important issues and then makes recommendations in hopes of preventing deaths to Mississippi children from causes or dangers that can be removed or lessened through the work and efforts of parents, care givers, driver, and health care providers. A car crashed into the front of New Beginnings Daycare, an Indiana day care center. The car was driver by a parent whose child attends the day care. Apparently, the driver jumped a curb in the center’s parking lot and rammed into the building’s office. Luckily, no one was injured. However, severe damages was done to the building; the wall of the knocked in several feet and the floor was littered with debris such as files and bottles. In Novato, California, school officials closed down three playgrounds at schools to further study the playgrounds for safety precautions. Experts will be consulted to determine what modifications need to be made to make the playgrounds safer for children. One child was reported to fall from the structure which, in turn, caused a fractured arm. Another child also fractured an arm while another suffered from a dislocated shoulder. It was reported that 6 children suffered broken bones after falling from these structures in just a 3 week time period. Officials will evaluate the height of the structure, the number of children that have been playing on the structure at one time, and the manufacturer specifications for the structure.
