For the most part, children are safely transported without incident or injury. Unfortunately, at times, a child suffers serious personal injuries while riding a school bus. Some child personal injuries result from an automobile accident. Some result from the unsafe driving of the bus driver. Other incidents or injuries that take place on a school bus result from fights and / or aggressive behavior from other students. The Las Cruces Public School district will be investigating this incident. Unfortunately, there were no video cameras posted on this bus.

playground%20tire%20swings%20empty.jpgPlaygrounds are a great place for children to play in a defined area with other children. Many playgrounds are safe and built to standards. With good supervision, these playgrounds are great for children. Other playgrounds, however, are not well maintained or built and contain a number of hidden dangers to children. Before a child is allowed to play on a playground, a parent, caregiver, day care provider, or teacher should inspect the equipment to make sure that it is safe and age appropriate for the children. If everything checks out, supervision is key to the safety of children. Children often times lack good safety awareness and judgment. As such, supervision is the best way to keep children safe on playgrounds. In Georgia as well as other States, day care centers have a duty to provide children with a safe and secure learning environment. Day care centers should serve and look out for the best interests of children. Unfortunately, many day care centers in Georgia fall short. A study conducted by a private company through the State Department of Early Care and Learning indicated that two thirds of the day care centers in Georgia offered care that was low in quality to infants and toddlers. This is a staggering statistic and an indication of a true problem in Georgia. Often, a low quality day care center fails to have appropriate safety and supervision measures in place. As a result thereof, children then suffer serious personal injuries at a day care center. The needs of the the children in day care centers have to be paramount over everything else. In Ohio, parents, caregivers, schools, and day care providers should be aware of a new law that recently went into full enforcement mode. Children from the ages of 4 to 8 years old must be placed in a booster seat unless the child is 4 Feet 9 Inches tall. Children from the ages of 8 to 15 years of age must wear a seat belt. Safety advocates are pleased with the passage and enforcement of this law. With or without a law in effect, parents, schools, and day care providers should think of safety first when transporting a child. Seat belts, infant seats, and booster seats can help prevent serious personal injuries and even death resulting from an automobile accident. State%20Map%20Indiana.jpgIn Martinsville, Indiana, police were called to a day care center after the child began throwing a fit. It was reported by Fox News that one police officer slapped the child and another tasered the child for 1 to 2 seconds. The child’s guardian operates the day care center. Some argue that the tasering of a child is an excessive way to punish or control a child. Others may not have a problem with tasering, corporal punishment or other physical harm to a child.

In California and other states, there are thousands upon thousands of child sexual predators out there. Some live on our streets. Some teach in our schools. Some even serve on our school boards. Yes, you read that correctly – some child sexual predators are even school board members. In Rio School District (Ventura County), school board member, Brian Martin (age 49), pleaded guilty to sexual abuse of a minor child and to child molestation charges. The abuse took place over a 5 year period. It is quite disturbing to know that a person who was setting and enforcing school board policies was actually a child predator. Children enrolled in a day care center have a right to be cared for in a safe and clean environment. Day care workers should dutifully supervise the children and make sure that the children safe and kept away from dangers and hazards. Some day care workers and centers take short cuts in care and take actions that are harmful to children. Some day care workers even drug children to make them tired and easier to care for. In Spain, one such day care worker was caught and is being charged with a crime after many children were hospitalized. Laboratory test showed that the children were given or ingested benzodiazepines which is a drug prescribed by doctors to patients with anxiety, sleep disorders and panic disorders. It is certainly not a drug that doctors prescribe to make a day care worker’s job easier. You can read more about this story at Day Care Worker Charged with Drugging Children.
