In Washington and many other States, spring brings weather in which we can finally enjoy the outdoors and open our windows. Parents, teachers, caregivers, and day care providers should be aware that an open window can be very dangerous for curious children who lack good safety awareness. Safety precautions should be taken which can include screens and other devices that keep the child from falling out of the window. In Marysville, Washington, a 3 year boy fell out of a window. Another child was reported to have fallen within the last month of so. Emergency rooms in Washington and other States report that these incidents typically occur between the months of May and October. In Texas and other States, day care centers and child care centers have a duty to provide a safe and clean learning environment for children. It is vital that the day care workers are consistent and alert during the entire work day. Otherwise, incidents that are otherwise preventable can happen which can and do cause harm to a child. In Texas, it was reported by KVUE News that a toddler somehow got out of a day care center and was found by a bystander near a busy road where the speed limit is 60 miles per hour. There could have easily been a tragic ending to this story as well as the life of a young children. Fortunately, tragedy was avoided. U.S.%20State%20Flag%20Alabama.jpg

In Alabama, Erica DeRamus attended her prom in a dress that her mother approved and liked. School officials did not like the dress and determined that the prom dress violated the student dress code. Erica and other students were given one of two options for punishment: 1. Three day suspension OR 2. Paddling. Erica choose the suspension while others opted for the paddling. Many parents do not realize it but corporal punishment is still on the books for many school districts in Alabama and other States. To get paddled over a prom dress seems extreme and excessive. Yes, the school district did give the students the option of the two forms of punishment; nevertheless, the punishment seems extreme either way for an issue or debate over a prom dress. You can read more about this story and see a video at the Huffington Post Website at Alabama Student Choses Suspension Over Paddling for Punishment Involving Prom Dress.

U.S.%20State%20Flag%20Oklahoma.jpgIn Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, a day care center that part of a national chain of cay care centers (La Petite Academy) has been cited by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) for a lack of supervision of the children. It was reported that a number of children were victims of improper touching and other inappropriate acts with other children. The lack of supervision appears to have played a role in the number of incidents and the fact that children were not better protected from engaging in or being subject to such conduct.

Education%20Day%20Care%20Building%20Block%20G.jpgIn Manheim, Pennsylvania, a day care worker has been criminally charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child regarding an incident that took place at the day care center – Small Freys Children Center. A 3 year old girl was placed in a time out. During the time out session, the child kept on turning her head. A day care center worker was not pleased with this conduct and “slammed” the girl’s head against the wall. While placing a child in a brief time out period can be appropriate, slamming the girl’s head against a wall is never appropriate. In fact, police in Pennsylvania have deemed this to be criminal conduct. The incident was witnessed by another day care worker.

In Edmond, Oklahoma, police reported that a home based day care center Royal Platinum Care had loaded guns on the property. Loaded guns were found in the attic, garage and a safe. There were no reports that the children had touched or otherwise accessed the guns; however, the State of Oklahoma Department of Human Services investigators believed that the guns violated Oklahoma laws as they pertained to day care centers. It should be noted that an incident or violation should not be solely judged on whether a child suffered personal injuries or wrongful death. Truly, the time to step in and make changes to a day care center is before tragedy strikes. Of course, the operator of the day care center can appeal or challenge any findings.
