In Florala, Alabama, an 8 year old elementary school student was killed when she was hit by her own school bus. The child exited the bus and then walked in front of the bus. According to Florala Police Chief Sonny Bedsole, it appeared that the school bus driver did not observe that the child got off the bus because the child may have exited off at the wrong stop or the wrong time. In Trenton, New Jersey, criminal charges were filed against the driver of the transport van employed with Roselle-based On Time Transport Inc. and a day care center worker employed with Pediatric Day Health Center. The incident was very problematic in that the child had serious health conditions that put the child at significant risk for serious personal injuries. The child, Ty’on Moore, was enrolled as a student at the Pediatric Day Health Center. Ty’on was left in a van in front of the day care center for about 5 hours. Ty’on has medical problems including chronic asthma and seizures. The family was very relieved, after Ty’on was evaluated and treated at a local hospital, that more serious complications did not result from such neglect. Police reported that Ty’on was visibly dazed as a result of the incident and possible medical complications from the 5 hour stay in the van.
In Houston, Texas, a family is grieving the death of 3 month old Kamron Kelly. Police believe that the mother’s boyfriend (Nathaniel Flowers) shook the baby which in turn caused injuries consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome. A neighbor had attempted to revive the baby after he was contacted by Nathaniel Flowers. During the CPR efforts, it was reported that Flowers attempted to leave the area or scene. In Connecticut, police arrested a convicted sex offender for having child pornography including photographs and images on a computer. Due to the large number of images located (20,000 – Twenty Thousand), it appears unlikely that the images were accidentally downloaded or mistakenly placed on the computers. Of course, the criminal defendant (Charles Heaton – age 60) in this case will be entitled to the services of a public defender or a private criminal defense attorney.
In Kansas and other states, some drivers especially young ones in sports cars or little sports cars believe it is great fun and a challenge to race other drivers. The thrill of speed and the chase take priority over the safety of others including innocent pedestrians and children. In Wichita, Kansas, one such drag racing incident ended the life of Robert Ryder – age 25 – who was pronounced dead at the scene. His cousin was reported to have serious personal injuries resulting in a hospitalization. You can read more about this story at 
In Minnesota and other States, parents should be able to trust teachers, day care providers, coaches, church leaders and volunteers, and scout leaders. Unfortunately, there are just too many youth leaders who should be role models but are actually out there causing harm to children. In Minnesota, a man recently pleaded guilty to producing a mobile phone video that showed a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct. Michael Angelo Borromeo is a former Girl Scout Volunteer for the Girls Scouts of Minnesota and the Wisconsin River Valley. Mr. Borromeo was charged with several crimes including criminal sexual conduct (felony), child solicitation, and creating child pornography.
In 2007, six year old Haven Brooke McCarthy was getting out of her Lincoln County, West Virginia school bus when she was hit and killed by a vehicle illegally passing her school bus. At the time, the driver’s offense was considered a misdemeanor. Since Haven’s death, her family has been working with lawmakers to toughen up the penalties for breaking school bus safety laws.
