In Prince William County, Virginia, a pedestrian was hit and killed by a Charter Bus full of middle school students from Tallahassee, Florida. It was the tragic end to the young life of Jose Chavez who was only 18 years old. It was also quite frightening for the students to be on a bus and so close to a death scene. In Houston, Texas, a family is grieving the death of 3 month old Kamron Kelly. Police believe that the mother’s boyfriend (Nathaniel Flowers) shook the baby which in turn caused injuries consistent with Shaken Baby Syndrome. A neighbor had attempted to revive the baby after he was contacted by Nathaniel Flowers. During the CPR efforts, it was reported that Flowers attempted to leave the area or scene. In Connecticut, police arrested a convicted sex offender for having child pornography including photographs and images on a computer. Due to the large number of images located (20,000 – Twenty Thousand), it appears unlikely that the images were accidentally downloaded or mistakenly placed on the computers. Of course, the criminal defendant (Charles Heaton – age 60) in this case will be entitled to the services of a public defender or a private criminal defense attorney.
In Kansas and other states, some drivers especially young ones in sports cars or little sports cars believe it is great fun and a challenge to race other drivers. The thrill of speed and the chase take priority over the safety of others including innocent pedestrians and children. In Wichita, Kansas, one such drag racing incident ended the life of Robert Ryder – age 25 – who was pronounced dead at the scene. In Minnesota and other States, parents should be able to trust teachers, day care providers, coaches, church leaders and volunteers, and scout leaders. Unfortunately, there are just too many youth leaders who should be role models but are actually out there causing harm to children. In Minnesota, a man recently pleaded guilty to producing a mobile phone video that showed a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct. Michael Angelo Borromeo is a former Girl Scout Volunteer for the Girls Scouts of Minnesota and the Wisconsin River Valley. Mr. Borromeo was charged with several crimes including criminal sexual conduct (felony), child solicitation, and creating child pornography.

In 2007, six year old Haven Brooke McCarthy was getting out of her Lincoln County, West Virginia school bus when she was hit and killed by a vehicle illegally passing her school bus. At the time, the driver’s offense was considered a misdemeanor. Since Haven’s death, her family has been working with lawmakers to toughen up the penalties for breaking school bus safety laws.
The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a warning and recall notice for roman shades sold by Ethan Allen Design Centers under the Ethan Allen brand name. The recall involves over 150,000 shades, which are said to pose a strangulation threat if a child places his or her neck between the inner cord and the fabric back of the shade, or if the child wraps the inner cord or exposed loop around his or her neck.
