For busy working parents in the State of Minnesota, it is important for a parent to select a day care center that is well run, clean, safe, and staffed with caring and trained child care providers.  It is typically a wise decision to select a day care cente that is licensed.  While a license is not guarantee that a day care is safe, the lack of a license should be a warning sign to parents during the selection of a day care center.   In Minnesota, day care centers are required to comply with Chapter 245A – Human Services Licensing, Minnesota Statutes, in order to obtain and maintain a day care center license.  Pursuant to Section 245AA.04 Application Process, Subdivision 4, a day care center applying be inspected by the Commissioner of the Department of Human Services which shall include but is not limited to the following:

Building Blocks Glossy - Q - Day Care CenterIn Ohio and other states, parents rely on day care centers to supervise their children during the busy work day.  For many parents, there is no choice but to use the services of a day care center.  It is certainly a challenge to provide the support of the family while paying for day care. Ideally, a child is placed in and cared for in a day care center that provides a safe, clean, and educational environment for the children.  Unfortunately, for far too many children, many day care centers are actually unsafe, unclean, and provide little in the way of education to the children enrolled in the child care program.   One would think that the State entity in charge of licensing and inspecting day care centers would evaluate all aspects of the day care center including the cleanliness, safety, and educational value of the facility.

NX_truck_rear_contnrThroughout Tennessee and other states, trucks, tractor trailers, and big rigs are common sites on the roads, highways, and expressways.   Certainly, big trucks are an important part of both intrastate and interstate commerce. Theres large commercial trucks also pose a significant risk of serious injuries and deaths to adults and children alike to the size disparity between these trucks and common personal vehicles / automobiles.   Because of this, it is important that commercial truck drivers are well trained, alert, and well rested.  Furthermore, excessive speed and daydreaming need to be avoided as well.  Finally, driver distractions should be limited and removed whenever possible.  Texting while any vehicle including but limited to a commercial truck is simply careless and can and does lead to serious accidents causing personal injuries and the deaths of others.

New York City StreetIn New York and other States, parents rely on day care centers and the transportation provided by day care centers during working hours.  It is essential that day care centers carry out these responsibilities with due care and caution. It is well known that children (especially children under the age of 5 years old) lack safety awareness and good judgment. Because of this, it is vital that the child care providers and day care staff members follow applicable rules and regulations and otherwise perform their duties with a sense of professionalism and due diligence.  Finally, there is something that every day care center staff members should have from the lowest level employee to the administrator / owner – common sense.  While there are many rules and regulations, it is impossible for these day care center rules and regulations to cover every incident that could take place at a day care center. As such, the concepts of reasonableness, due diligence, and common sense should all come into play during the care, supervision, and transportation of children.

 Trampolines are common sites in most neighborhoods especially those with small children.  While a trampoline can provide children with an activity that is away from the computer, smart phone, X-Box, and other sedentary activities, the trampoline can also be the site or location for serious personal injuries.  Unfortunately, many homeowners,  business owners, school administrators, or amusement – theme park operators  with trampolines on the premises fail to maintain the trampoline in a safe condition OR fail to provide adequate and appropriate adult supervision during the child’s use of a trampoline.   Small children especially those with poor motor skills are especially at risk for trampoline related personal injuries.   There are some safety precautions that can and should be taken as follows:

All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) can be great fun for children and adults alike; unfortunately, these same recreational vehicles are the cause or mechanism of thousands upon thousands of personal injuries and, in some instances, the deaths of children.  Just because an All Terrain Vehicle seems like great fun – – parents and other adults responsible for the care and well being of children should pay close attention to the statistics out there which show over 100,000 visits to the emergency room due to injuries / deaths attributed to All Terrain Vehicle use and operation.  Some States like Pennsylvania have restrictions as age requiremnts for use of ATVs.   While laws can help deter dangerous activities by children and dangerous activities permitted by adults, children across the Nation and in Pennsylvania continue to operate All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) without training, licensure, adult supervision, or proper training.  There are dangers both when a child operates an ATV and when a child is a passenger of an ATV.  At any moment, a child operator or passenger can fall off of an ATV. This can be especially dangerous if the child is not wearing a helmet, the ATV is being operated at a high rate of speed and / or is taking a sharp turn, and when the ATV is being operated on rough terrain or on a street.

Halloween is a wonderful tradition for most children in most neighborhoods.  It is a magical night for most who venture out to knock on doors to get free candy.  It is a night full of adventure and fun.  Unfortunately for some children and their parents, Halloween marks the day / night when tragedy strikes.   Despite the fact that Halloween always falls on same day of the year and the fact that Halloween is a well known tradition filled with child pedestrians and trick or trickers, there are still pedestrian accidents, personal injuries, and even deaths that take place on Halloween.  With a long standing tradition of trick or treaters, Halloween is a magical night but also a very dangerous one.  It can be quite a challenge to drive a vehicle in any residential or commercial area on Halloween night.  It is important to drive with the utmost of caution.  Drivers should not just obey the speed limits and local traffic regulations. Drivers should drive well below the speed limits and be on the look out for children.
